Why does WICShopper say my fresh fruit or vegetable is NOT APPROVED?
Sometimes a fruit or vegetable may show as “Not Approved” in the WICShopper app, even though it can be purchased with WIC. This happens because some barcode numbers (UPCs) are not included in the app.
Examples may include:
- Grapes
- Fresh-cut cantaloupe
- Strawberries
- Bagged avocados
For the best results, use the 4-digit PLU number found on the produce sticker instead of scanning the barcode. You can enter the PLU number at checkout and in the WICShopper app. Always check the Kansas WIC Food List to make sure the item is WIC approved.
